In the midst of the tense post-election situation that Venezuelathe journalist Carmela Longo She was arrested in Caracas along with his son, according to the complaint National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) Longo, known for her coverage of the entertainment industry, was arrested after her home was raided and her work equipment confiscated.
The arrest comes days after the journalist announced her dismissal from the newspaper Latest Newsa medium prochavista where he worked for almost twenty years.
The SNTP counted the arrest of seven journalists since elections of July 28. In addition, two other arrests of journalists linked to political activism were recorded. The situation in the country remains critical, with protests which have already left a balance of 27 dead, 200 injured and more than 2,400 arrested.
Despite the seriousness of the events, the authorities did not offer details about Longo’s arrest or report any charges against him. The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) expressed concern about the growing repression of freedom of expression.
