Journalists in Danger (JED), in partnership with Internews, is holding a training workshop from 21 to 22 June in Kinshasa focusing on “evaluation of surveillance tools and mechanisms for the protection of journalists”. The objective is to take stock of the security situation of media professionals and list the various attacks of which they are victims; to discuss the different surveillance tools that each organization puts in place to defend and protect journalists in their daily work; and see to what extent the various mechanisms, legal, conventional or not, for the protection of journalists make it possible to improve the protection and safety of journalists.

journalists in times of peace and in times of conflict and finally highlight the contribution of the new law on freedom of the press in improving the physical safety of journalists and in protecting their right to freedom of expression.

For this first day, the participants discussed the problem of the physical safety of journalists and the last day will take stock of the examination of the role and the means available to organizations for the defense of freedom in the prevention of attacks against journalists.

“We put this exercise of reflection on the account of advocacy because we are among those who think that journalists must often be protected, if we really want to associate them in the work of reconstruction, pacification and even the development of our country in general. And to properly protect these journalists, there must be laws to make not only these laws but these legal prescriptions are respected”, declared Félix Kalala, assistant in charge of research / JED.

And to add:

“We also took into account the fact that journalists can become aware of their work, it must respect its code of ethics and deontology so as to live up to the expectations of the population. We think that with the responsible journalists, the journalists who work according to professional standards with them, we can compose in order to claim to bring back peace to our country, as long as the journalists will start giving us objective information with regard to the situation of war that the country is going through and when it comes to organizing the elections the journalists will give the information with responsibility so that these elections can take place in the best conditions and participate in the recovery of our country”.

The representative of the institution in charge of law enforcement, organizations for the defense and protection of freedom of the press, lawyers as well as media professionals take part in these meetings.
