The businessman and hotelier Juan Aceña Puig He passed away this Friday at the age of 91. Owner of establishments such as the Hotel Don Juan Resort in Lloret de Mar, he was one of the great hoteliers of the Costa Brava.
A “pioneering” hotelier
Business wise, Juan Aceña grew rapidly during the sixties. At the end of the 1970s, he was the owner of the San Martín hotel chain, one of the most important in Spain, which had a dozen hotels with a total of 5,000 beds. Most of these establishments were located in Lloret de Mar and two of them in Palma de Mallorca.
«It marked a before and after in regards to large hotel structures. In addition, it was, in the 70s, pioneer in bringing charters to the Costa Brava. He understood very well the important demand that there was from English tourism,” says Francesc Zucchitello, president of the Tossa de Mar Association of Hotel Businessmen.
During his professional career as a businessman, Juan Aceña Puig was also involved in suspension of payments and bankruptcies in some of his businesses.
In January of last year, one of its properties, the Hotel Don Juan, located in Lloret de Mar and one of the largest establishments in all of Catalonia with 819 rooms, became managed by the hotel company Fergus Group -owned by the Mallorcan businessman Pep Cañellas- which thus began to operate on the Costa Brava.

The change in management of this accommodation occurred coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the construction of Hotel Don Juan which, despite a change in management, continued to be owned by Don Juan Hotels and operated through the company Hotel Blanco Don Juan, which, with a staff of around 180 workers, was chaired by businessman Juan Aceña Puig.
Years ago, the businessman had had other hotel establishments on the Costa Brava, such as the Don Juan Center hotel in Lloret de Mar or the Don Juan hotel in Tossa de Mar.
