The 2024 edition of the Mexico City Half Marathon was marked by the tragic Death of a 32-year-old runner in the vicinity of the Angel of Independence. Despite the efforts of the medical team, the life of the participant could not be saved, He was transferred to the Rubén Leñero Hospital without vital signs.
The Mexico City Sports Institute (Indeporte) confirmed that the deceased did not have an official race number.
The runner, identified as Juan Stenner Escalante, fainted during the raceDespite receiving immediate attention from the Red Cross and being taken to hospital, he did not survive. Stenner was not officially registered in the competitiona fact that, although common in these events, did not prevent him from participating.
Juan Stenner Escalante, 32, was a former high-performance Mexican athlete. He participated in the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, where he achieved sixth place in the 4×400 meter relay event.His career includes international performances and his name appears in records of the International Olympic Committee and World Athletics.
On social media, information and condolences were shared for Stenner’s death. The Pan-American High School, where he studied, mourned his passing and remembered him as a great athlete and human being. In addition, the government of Mexico City has promised to support the family of the deceased.
Although he did not win any medals in his career, Stenner left a mark on Mexican athletics. After retiring from competition, he continued to be involved in the sport through support programs for outstanding athletes.
