A swift response from two citizens averted a potential disaster in Jubail Governorate, Saudi Arabia, after a fire broke out in a commercial store early this morning. The incident, which occurred after the Fajr prayer, highlights the importance of community vigilance and quick action in preventing significant property damage and potential harm.
Two local men, identified as Jaber Al-Yami and Mamdouh Al-Shammari, are being hailed for their bravery after successfully extinguishing a blaze at a commercial property. According to reports, Al-Yami and Al-Shammari were exercising when they noticed smoke emanating from the store.
Early Morning Discovery and Immediate Action
“After finishing the dawn prayer, I was exercising with my colleague, and during our return I noticed a fire burning in a commercial store,” Al-Yami explained in an interview with Al-Arabiya channel. Concerned for potential occupants, the pair immediately investigated, calling out to determine if anyone was inside. Finding the store unoccupied, they sprang into action.
Al-Yami recounted seeking assistance from a passerby, Mamdouh Al-Shammari, and strategically using his phone to document the incident. “I turned on my phone to document the situation, to protect myself and because this was citizens’ money, and I feared that the fire was intentional,” he stated. This proactive documentation suggests a concern for potential arson, which authorities are now investigating.
Demonstrating quick thinking, Al-Yami broke the lock on the shop door and removed the source of the fire, successfully containing the blaze before it could spread. The location of the store, situated near cars, other shops, and workers’ housing, meant the potential for rapid escalation was high.
“I was able to put out the fire, especially since the place was close to cars, shops, and workers’ housing,” Al-Yami said. Following the successful containment, the men immediately contacted the relevant security authorities, including civil defense and the police, as well as the shop owner and owners of nearby vehicles.
Hospitalization and Ongoing Investigation
The quick-thinking citizens were not without consequence. Al-Yami reported suffering from smoke inhalation and required approximately 12 hours of treatment at a local hospital. The incident underscores the risks involved in confronting such emergencies.
Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire, with the possibility of arson not being ruled out. The swift actions of Al-Yami and Al-Shammari undoubtedly prevented a more significant incident and potentially saved substantial property damage within the Jubail Governorate.
