Kollam: Jubin Jimmy, a Malayalee chess prospect who came close to becoming a Grand Master at the age of 16, is in crisis after failing to overcome the check of financial vulnerabilities.
The title of Grand Master is the biggest ambition of Jub, who is currently an International Master. But it needs better training and money to make it work.
Jubin is a Plus One student of Kollam Thevalli Government Higher Secondary School.
It was during the championship held in Spain that he reached the Grandmaster title by getting a rating of 2452. 2500 FIDE rating and three noms are required to attain Grandmaster status. It requires good training and participation in championships in different countries.
His father, Jimmy, had to give up his business to make his son a world-famous chess star. I also lost my job in a private company. The salary of his wife Jayamma, a nurse at ESI Hospital, is the sole source of income for the family of five.

Fees for international trainers are a minimum of $100 (Rs. 8000) per hour. About 23 lakh rupees have been spent so far on training and travel.
