golden Globes Set for Sibling Showdown: Jude Law and Jason bateman Compete for Best Actor

The upcoming Golden Globes awards may see a compelling rivalry play out not just on screen, but among its leading men, as both Jude law and Jason Bateman are strong contenders for Best actor in a limited Series or TV Movie.

Netflix’s suspenseful crime drama, Black Rabbit, has already generated significant buzz, but the real drama may unfold during awards season. The series centers on Jake Friedken, portrayed by Law,an NYC restaurateur whose life is thrown into turmoil by the return of his estranged brother,Vince, played by Bateman, and the accompanying baggage from their past that threatens their family business. This onscreen sibling dynamic could very well translate into a competitive face-off as both actors vie for individual recognition.

Currently, predictions from Gold Derby indicate that Law and Bateman are poised to join a competitive field including recent emmy winner Stephen Graham (Adolescence), Charlie Hunnam (Monster: The Ed Gein Story), and Brian Tyree Henry (Dope Thief). Law has recently risen in the rankings, surpassing Paul Giamatti (Black Mirror) to secure a spot within the top five potential nominees.

while it’s often considered unusual for two actors from the same production to be nominated in the same category, history suggests it’s far from unprecedented – particularly within the Best Limited/Movie Actor category.”It happens more often than you’d think,” one awards analyst noted.

Looking back, the 2016 Golden Globes saw Riz Ahmed and John Turturro competing for The Night Of, ultimately splitting the vote in favor of Tom Hiddleston for The Night Manager. Ahmed did, however, secure the Emmy win. In 2014, the category was dominated by costars, with Martin Freeman and Billy Bob thornton (Fargo) and Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey (True Detective) filling four of the five nomination slots, with Thornton ultimately taking home the prize.

The trend extends further back.in 2013,Steven Soderbergh’s Behind the Candelabra earned nominations for both Michael Douglas and matt Damon, with Douglas emerging victorious. A similar scenario unfolded in 2008 with Kevin Spacey and Tom Wilkinson competing for Recount, though both lost to paul Giamatti for John Adams. (Wilkinson did, however, win the supporting TV actor prize that same year for his work on John Adams). Even earlier, in 2000, Alec baldwin and Brian Cox both received bids for the limited series Nuremberg, with Brian Dennehy winning for Death of a Salesman. The pattern continues with James Woods beating out James garner in 1986 for Promise, Anthony Andrews besting Jeremy Irons in 1982 for Brideshead Revisited, and Peter O’Toole and peter Strauss competing for Masada in 1981, ultimately losing to Mickey Rooney in Bill.

Both Law and Bateman bring considerable Golden Globes pedigree to the table. Law has been nominated four times previously – three times for film roles (The Talented Mr. Ripley, A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Cold Mountain) and once for television (The Young Pope). bateman, meanwhile, has already secured a win for Best TV Comedy Actor for Arrested Development, and has been nominated for that series again, as well as three times for Ozark.

Given their established track records and the potential for a compelling narrative, it appears audiences may wont to reconsider predictions that only one of these “brothers” will be in contention for a Golden Globe.

Did you know? – It’s not uncommon for co-stars from the same production to be nominated in the same acting category at the Golden Globes, especially in the Limited Series/TV Movie categories. Gold Derby details several past instances.
