Judge Denies Lindsay Clancy Acquittal Bid Following Mistrial

A Massachusetts judge rejected an acquittal request for Lindsay Clancy on October 1, 2026, ruling that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence of criminal responsibility after a first trial ended in a hung jury over charges she strangled her three young children in January 2023.

Judge William Sullivan Rejects Acquittal Bid After Mistrial

More than three weeks after an impasse in Plymouth Superior Court forced a mistrial declaration on September 4, the legal battle over Lindsay Clancy returned to the courtroom.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington urged Judge William Sullivan to acquit the 36-year-old former nurse. Judge William Sullivan analyzed the matter after declaring a mistrial because the jury, consisting of nine women and three men, failed to reach a unanimous conclusion. Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz’s office reviewed the situation as the magistrate scheduled a subsequent hearing for November 2 to evaluate pending motions.

Sullivan denied the defense motion, concluding that the Commonwealth produced enough physical and circumstantial evidence for a jury to weigh the charges. Assistant District Attorney Shanan Buckingham maintained that the prosecution successfully carried its burden of proof during the proceedings.

The 2023 Tragedy in Duxbury And Postpartum Psychosis

The case stems from the deaths of Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and eight-month-old Callan on January 24, 2023. No one contested during the proceedings that Clancy strangled the three children with exercise resistance bands in the basement of the family’s home in Duxbury, a suburb south of Boston.

Clancy was subsequently hospitalized in a psychiatric facility under periodic review.

Judge denies motion to find Lindsay Clancy not guilty of murdering her three children

Throughout the five-week televised trial featuring over 80 witnesses, the defense argued that Clancy was suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and lacked the capacity to comprehend that her conduct was unlawful. Prosecutors countered that she planned the killings deliberately and understood the consequences. Outside the courthouse, dozens of supporters wearing pink gathered to demonstrate solidarity with the mother.

Legal Clashes Over Evidence And A Disagreeing Juror

The initial trial ended without a verdict after seven days of deliberations because the panel split 11 to 1, with the majority inclined toward finding Clancy not guilty by reason of insanity. Edward Paltzik, attorney for dissenting juror Michael Desronvil, stated to Fox News that his client strictly applied the standard of reasonable doubt. The defense also requested court documents concerning an unrelated dispute involving the dissenting juror’s former partner.

In post-mistrial hearings, the legal teams sharply sparred over the integrity of the state’s case.
