The judge of execution of sentences of Justice and Peace has issued an order by which the former paramilitary leader, Salvatore Mancuso, will be on conditional release for a period of four years.

However, this freedom comes with strict conditions: Mancuso will not be able to be present in the places where he committed crimes in the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) and must appear regularly before the judicial authorities.

Despite this decision, Mancuso will not be released immediately. The reason is that other Justice and Peace judges must resolve other pending legal aspects, such as security measures against you and other investigations that are ongoing in different parts of the country.

The judge emphasized that, although conditional release has been granted for four years, Mancuso faces other legal processes at various stages. Therefore, the validity of the release order will be subject to Mancuso not being required by other judicial authorities. The judge highlighted that Mancuso has a total of 33 security measures in Barranquilla and 14 in Bogotá.

Because of these additional legal issues that must be resolved, the parole order does not imply Mancuso’s immediate release. The final decision on his situation rests with other judicial bodies.

As of now, with the decision final, Mancuso is close to obtaining conditional freedom, but the decisions of the Justice and Peace Chambers of Barranquilla and Bogotá still remain to be defined. It is expected that in hearings scheduled for March 6 and March 15 respectively, a decision will be made on the replacement of all security measures against them, with 33 in Barranquilla and 14 in Bogotá.
