The director of the National Association of Circuit Judges y District Judges of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (JUFED)Juana Fuentes, announced that they will resort to all national and international instances to fight the approval of judicial reform.

In a statement she made outside the Senate, just hours after the ruling that reforms the Constitution in matters of the Judiciary was approved, the judge explained that they will look for the organizations that protect judicial independence.

He pointed out that they will go to the United Nations Human Rights Committee, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the global networks of judges and magistrates, “who are just now learning what is happening.”

Interviewed at the end of her speech, Fuentes added that the work stoppage in the Federal Judicial Branch that began at the first minute of August 21 will continue.

Regarding the sit-in that judicial workers are holding in both chambers of Congress, the leader of the JUFED said that this has to be assessed in conjunction with workers from the first circuit who are maintaining the blockade in San Lázaro, as well as members of other circuits who came to support the mobilization in the Senate.

“This reform, by subjecting judges to popular election, opens the door to external influences, to interests unrelated to justice, from crime to political pressure groups, as we experienced yesterday.

The balance of powers is fundamental for democracy, a strong and independent judiciary is the only guarantee that the decisions of the Executive and Legislative do not go beyond their limits, that the Constitution is complied with and that the laws are applied fairly.”Fuentes said.

The reform approved this morning, the judge said, breaks the balance, subordinating its decisions to the will of those who hold political power in turn.
Judicial branch workers from other states said they were not sure whether the blockade in the upper house would continue.
