BRASILIA (Reuters) – The Minister of Budget and Planning, Simone Tebet, said on Monday that the Council for the Accompaniment and Monitoring of Judicial Fiscal Risks approved a work schedule to analyze, among other topics, the payment of precatorios, the amount of which concerns the economic area of the government.

“It will be an intense and internal work until the end of the year, already with the assessment of these risks in the area of the issue of court writs, payments of small amounts, the stock of court writs, tax decisions and social security decisions that come,” said Tebet in a quick interview with journalists after a council meeting at the Ministry of Finance.

According to the minister, the schedule will end in mid-2024 and aims to ensure the credibility of the fiscal numbers that have been presented to the National Congress and the Judiciary. Tebet highlighted that the high total amount of precatories to be paid “puts at risk the country’s administrative machinery and essential public policies”.

To contextualize the volume of the amount compared to the federal budget, the minister highlighted that the total value of the obligations to be paid is around 69 billion reais, approximately the same as the government stipulated to allocate to public investments in 2024 through the Growth Acceleration Program.

The council, created in January, is formed by Tebet, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, and the Attorney General of the Union, Jorge Messias, who chairs it.

According to the Treasury, the objective of the collegiate is to propose measures to improve the governance of judicial fiscal risks of the Union and solutions to strengthen and subsidize the activities of its autarchies and foundations in judicial representations and in the monitoring of judicial events that may affect public accounts.
