INTERVIEW – While journalist Julian Assange is still held in prison in England, we welcome his father, John Shipton. He has today become a very committed member of the WikiLeaks founder’s support committee. John Shipton travels around the world to meet officials and tries to convince them to create an international delegation to raise public awareness of the journalist’s cause.A documentary, Ithaca, is released (available on VOD)and traces John Shipton’s commitment to his son.

Julian Assange has been incarcerated in the high security Belmarsh prison in the United Kingdom for four years in inhumane conditions (a detention regime similar to terrorists although he is, officially, on remand!). However, no complaint has been filed against him across the Channel. The Australian is accused of espionage in the United States and faces up to 175 years in prison for having disclosed millions of confidential documents revealing, among other things, American war crimes in Iraq, espionage, surveillance mass, corruption, etc. In this interview, his father, John Shipton, discusses the importance of defending Julian Assange and the democratic issue it involves, as well as the Westminster declaration, warning of abuses threatening the free expression of the media, signed by Julian Assange himself, Edward Snowden, Oliver Stone and Xavier Azalbert, publishing director of France-Soir (and the only representative of a French media in the list of signatories). John Shipton remembers the good times: “Julian said to me: ‘We’re going to create a Wiki, Dad!’”

Erratum: in the interview, John Shipton mentions an LFI deputy supporting the committee’s action, it is Arnaud Le Gall, and not Pierre Le Gall.
