Martín Palermo was the protagonist of a tense moment at the press conference after the friendly with River Plate at the Mas Monumental.
The technical director of Olimpia, a self-confessed acolyte of Boca Juniors, the club with which he won everything he played for as a player, came out in response to the press of his country, who, true to their style, did not waste any opportunity to stir up the eternal animosity between the ‘xeneizes’ and the ‘millonarios’.
“Do you see yourself as River’s coach at some point?” the reporter asked. Palermo did not hide his surprise and annoyance at the question and said: “Is this (journalist) from a comedy show, or something?”
The journalist justified his question by saying that Palermo never denied, not even during his time as a forward, the possibility of one day wearing the red stripe. “Do you think I can come here to coach River?” the coach retorted.
“I went unnoticed, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to come and manage (River). I don’t know. Do you think so? That tomorrow the title of Olé will be ‘Palermo said it can…’ If you’re a programme to laugh at, we all laugh. And if we’re going to be serious, we’re serious,” he continued.
Palermo avoided adding fuel to the fire and decided to cut the issue short. “I think you are wrong, I am very professional, and as I believe I am very respectful, I think the answer is unnecessary and we should talk about something else, not about me becoming River’s coach. You are out of place,” concluded the franjeado coach.
