Aristotle already believed that the Moon has a great influence on nervous diseases and the occurrence of epilepsy. It has already been established that the full moon does not affect epilepsy, but may affect seizures of other etiologies.
But with regard to other nervous diseases, Aristotle seems to have been partly right. Recent research has shown that the full moon actually affects the clinical severity of bipolar disorder – it has been found to accelerate the transition between depressive and manic phases.
By the way, a study by Turkish scientists revealed the influence of the phases of the moon on the course of migraines. Children’s clinic patients had more frequent migraine attacks when the Moon was young, and shorter headache attacks during the full moon.
In popular literature, there are many claims that various behavioral disorders often appear during the full moon – people become impulsive, nervous, chronic diseases even worsen, and some individuals are also affected by apathy. Is it really so – scientists from many countries tried to find the answer.
An extended analysis of 37 serious scientific studies showed that there is no statistically reliable connection between the various phases of the Moon and changes in human behavior. By the way, research conducted in sleep laboratories also revealed that during the full moon, people fall asleep five minutes later, 20 minutes later. sleeps shorter and during the entire sleep period 30 min. there is less deep sleep.
It could be concluded that some individuals may feel incompletely rested and irritated due to insufficient sleep during the full moon.
It is also interesting that the laboratory tests carried out during another study showed that a few days before the full moon, the concentration of testosterone and melatonin, which is responsible for sleep, decreases in the blood, which can apparently explain sleep disorders. It appears that the full moon can affect other laboratory parameters as well.
A study conducted by Indian scientists revealed that blood glucose concentration increases during the full moon, which apparently should be taken into account when screening patients for diabetes. Since the influence of the phases of the Moon on testosterone concentration has already been mentioned, and at the household level, on the Internet, I had to read various opinions about the influence of the Moon on reproductive function and the birth of children, probably, scientific research can reveal the real situation.
Research results from a Kyoto hospital once made a big splash. After analyzing 1,000 births, it turned out that during a “supermoon” (a situation where there is a full moon and the Moon is maximally close to the Earth) children were born significantly more. Newspapers flashed the headlines “Supermoon Baby Boom”. Undoubtedly, there has been an increase in the world of believers in the influence of the phases of the Moon on the birth of children.
One of the studies relied on an analysis of only 8,395 cases. The authors of the article presented sensational results – 14.7 percent more children were born during the full moon, compared to other phases of the Moon.
Meanwhile, in North Carolina (USA), 0.5 million births were analyzed over a 5-year period – no relationship between the phases of the moon and the number of children born was found, which was confirmed by a similar study by researchers from the University of California (USA).
In Spain, a 120-year period of births registered in rural regions during 1,484 lunar cycles was analyzed, and no relationship was found between the phases of the moon and the number of children. Meanwhile, French researchers, who studied over 5.9 million births over a 16-year period, found that a significantly higher number of births occur during the new moon.
Perhaps it is not so important when children are born, but it is important that they are born and that they are born as many as possible.
