The date is on everyone’s mind. Fearing a resurgence of riots on the occasion of National Day, next July 14, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne announced this Saturday in an interview with Le Parisien that the government will deploy that day “massive means to protect the French”.

After the lull observed in recent days in the riots that followed the death of young Nahel, “the elected officials and inhabitants that I met on the ground are indeed quite worried in the perspective of the National Day and possible new incidents “says Elisabeth Borne. “The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, will specify this, but the means will be massive to protect the French”, during the two “sensitive days” of July 13 and 14, thus assures the Prime Minister.

“Out of the question” to cancel July 14, says Véran

The Matignon tenant also signed a decree, which will be published on Sunday in the Official Journal, to prohibit the sale, port and transport of fireworks mortar during the July 14 festivities, she tells us. “Only professionals, who will organize the fireworks in the municipalities, will be able to buy them”, specifies Élisabeth Borne.

Used for pyrotechnic shows, firework mortars have been hijacked for several years and used as a weapon against law enforcement. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin issued an order last week prohibiting the sale and transport of this equipment, but also cans of gasoline, acids and flammable and chemical products.

Government spokesman Olivier Véran also assured Thursday that the State would do “everything to ensure that the conditions of security and public tranquility are met” for July 14, while the police are anticipating a resurgence of tensions. “It is out of the question to consider that [la fête nationale] should give way behind a few thousand rioters in our cities”, he had decided on LCI.
