One year before the Olympic Games, the 2023 promotion of the Legion of Honor offers eight personalities from sport on this Friday, July 14, among the 358 people from the civilian world rewarded.
Among the rewarded, we find the navigator Charles Caudrelier (49 years old), winner of the Route du rhum 2022 according to a proposal by Élisabeth Borne, the Prime Minister. Still in the field of sailing, Maud Fontenoy (45) was proposed by Christophe Béchu, the Minister for Ecological Transition and Territorial Cohesion.
The other proposals come from Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the Minister of Sports for Sports and the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The former tennis player has not forgotten her favorite sport by naming Françoise Dürr (80), crowned at Roland-Garros in 1967. A few days before the start of the Women’s Football World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, Sandrine Soubeyrand, coach of Paris FC, was rewarded while she is still the record holder of selections in the French team with 198 caps.
Women’s sport is still in the spotlight with the promotions of Claude Mondonnaud (73), who won 50 national titles between 1966 and 1974 in swimming, as well as Katia Benth (47), vice-world champion in the 4x100m in 1999. The latter, who is now an athletics coach, had her left leg partially amputated in 2019.
