Although rumors indicated that they would separate ways, the relationship between Jumbo-Visma and Olav Kooij will last for two more seasons. This is how the Dutch team made it known through a creative video focused on the information that circulated in recent weeks.
In the ad, Jonas Vingegaard and Christophe Laporte appear saying goodbye to their teammate until they are interrupted by Merijn Zeeman, who informs them that the sprinter will remain with the team.
“We have been honest with each other about the possibilities and impossibilities,” said Zeeman, aware that Kooij could leave to exploit his potential in a structure where he was guaranteed leadership, because with Van Aert and Laporte himself, he was (is) a couple of steps down in the hierarchy.
This new agreement will allow the 21-year-old to continue his progression and enjoy a higher-level calendar. For that matter, he will debut in grand tours next year -Giro or Vuelta- and will gradually assume a more leading role in the team’s powerful block of classics, as he feels he can “compete in certain one-day races”.
Time will tell if Kooij was right or wrong in this decision, since on the one hand he will continue to be stuck in the hierarchical order unless there is an inexorable decline of the others mentioned or a notable leap in quality on his part; However, it must not be forgotten that he is very young -and talented- and that therefore he has a margin, so if the panorama does not change between now and 2025, he can change the air being an even better cyclist at those heights.
