Nestled amidst the beautiful Nilgiri valleys amidst the jungle, ‘Jungle Hut’ homestay has been welcoming guests since 1986. Apart from living amidst nature, people from different parts of India come to stay here for activities like trekking, jungle safari and bird watching.

Jo and Harmi Mathias from Tamil Nadu decided to build themselves a house in the Nilgiri valleys in the 80s with the money they had accumulated after years of working in tea estates. Since many tourists from India and abroad come to visit and stay at this beautiful place, the couple thought of starting their tourism business here. And in 1986, he started Jungle Hut, a beautiful and sustainable homestay set amidst nature.

Jo and Herme’s son, Vikram, 48, has been managing this homestay for the past 15 years. He told The Better India, “My parents had bought this land in 1981 and they always wanted to build something here that was eco-friendly.” Initially, his friends and relatives used to stay here, but as people came to know about this place, people from all over South India started coming to stay at Jungle Hut. Soon Jo and Herme had to expand this homestay from 2 rooms to 14 guest rooms.

For the past 15 years, Vikram and his wife Anushree Mathia have been running this homestay and taking forward the tourism and hospitality business started by their parents.

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve with excellent wildlife is in the vicinity of this homestay which is home to many wild animals like Bengal Tiger, Leopard, Asiatic Elephant, Indian Gaur, Sloth Bear, Hyena, Wild Boar. Also this place is great for activities like trekking, jungle safari and bird watching. By staying in the tent rooms of Jungle Hut, guests coming from India and abroad can enjoy the full experience of living amidst nature.

Jungle Hut has a swimming pool inside and a variety of indoor and outdoor games for adults and children. Vikram explains, “We have Classic, Premium and Deluxe tent rooms, which are unlike any typical luxury resort. We promote sustainable living and Jungle Hut offers guests the opportunity to connect with nature while savoring delicious home-cooked food.”

This homestay teaches us how to live sustainably

“We offset more than 50 per cent of our normal consumption of electricity because of solar water heaters and heat pumps,” Anushri explains.
Here 50% electricity is saved.

In addition, the Jungle Hut has a rainwater harvesting system and solar panels installed on top of each room. Solar water heaters and heat pumps used here save about 50% electricity. The rooms at this homestay are made from eco-friendly materials like mud brick and wood, which keeps the house naturally cool even in summers and does not require AC.

Apart from being sustainable, today Jungle Hut is also working to advance the people of the local tribe community settled in the villages of India by giving them employment.
