The 57-year-old is currently jobless after leaving Liverpool FC and is taking a break from the football business. However, “Kloppo” is making an exception – for two Dortmund club legends.
Jürgen Klopp is returning to his former place of work in Dortmund. As the Bundesliga club announced, the former BVB coach will coach the Allstars in Blaszczykowski’s team on September 7th at the farewell game of Lukasz Piszczek and Jakub Blaszczykowski.
The two former Polish internationals will face off against their former Dortmund teammates in their farewell match. “I’m really looking forward to it – of course I have time,” said former BVB and Liverpool coach Klopp, who was invited to the match at Signal-Iduna-Park by Piszczek and Blaszczykowski via the Internet while on holiday in Mallorca.
According to BVB, in addition to sports director Sebastian Kehl and coach Nuri Sahin, Marcel Schmelzer, Kevin Großkreutz, Roman Weidenfeller, Patrick Owomoyela, Dedê, Moritz Leitner, Florian Kringe, Mohamed Zidan, Neven Subotić and Antonio da Silva have already confirmed their participation in the game. The division of the teams is still to be determined.
The 57-year-old Klopp coached BVB from 2008 to 2015 and shaped a successful period: With the Black and Yellows, the coach, who is popular beyond sport, won two German championships (2011, 2012) and a DFB Cup (2012). 2013 was the greatest success at European level: Klopp and Dortmund reached the Champions League final, but in the German final there was a dramatic 1:2 defeat against eternal Bundesliga rivals FC Bayern.
The two long-time Polish internationals were key players in the team during Klopp’s Dortmund era. Blaszczykowski played for Dortmund from 2007 to 2015, Piszczek joined in 2010 and stayed until 2021. “Kuba” had already ended his career in 2023 at the traditional Polish club Wisla Kraków, Piszczek played in his home country for fourth division club LKS Goczalkowice-Zdrój until summer 2024.
