Until now, Puce was co-chairman of LA together with Ivars Ijab and Arti Pabrika. From now on, the party will have one leader and two deputies.
LA Pūci has applied as the party’s candidate for the position of mayor of Riga in next year’s municipal elections. Puce has been one of the leaders of LA for many years, including the 14th Saeima elections held in 2022, in which LA failed to enter the parliament. He was a councilor of Riga, a member of the Saeima and the minister of environmental protection and regional development.
Four years ago, Pūce resigned from the position of the chairman of the board of the party ”Latvijas tīvāda” after he was insulted for the illegal use of the parking lot in Riga and was caught in a lie about this incident. The LA then moved to a multi-co-chair model of party leadership, which it has now abandoned again.
Member of the European Parliament Ijabs, former Minister of Defense Pabriks, Mārupe County Municipality Deputy Aivars Osītis, Riga branch member Artūrs Detlavs, former Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development Artūrs Toms Plešs, “LA veteran” Edgars Jaunups, Cēsu County Municipality deputy will also work in the party’s new board. Elīna Stapulone, former general secretary of the party Yeļena Jesajana, Riga City Council member Viesturs Zeps and former economy minister Vyacheslavs Dombrovskis. Until now, there were eight people on the LA board.
“I am well aware that these will be two very important years and two elections both for LA and for the whole of Latvia. In the European Parliament elections a year ago, we won third place with a result that confirmed that people support our ideas and appreciate our work. I will run in Riga and I can it’s safe to say – after the elections in 2025, Riga will no longer be the capital of potholes and dilapidated bridges. It will be easier to get a building permit in Riga than in Vilnius and Tallinn, and the residents of Riga will feel safer, more comfortable and easier. I know that our candidates have equally serious goals in approximately 30 municipalities throughout Latvia,” said Pūce after the election.
A general meeting of LA members was held on Saturday, where the party’s leadership was chosen for the next two years and the amendments to the statutes were decided.
Interview between Time.news Editor and Political Analyst about LA’s Leadership Changes
Time.news Editor: Welcome, everyone, to Time.news! Today, we are discussing an important shift in the political landscape of Latvia, particularly within the party “Latvijas Attīstībai” (LA). I’m joined by political expert, Anna Klints, who has been following the developments closely. Anna, thank you for being here!
Anna Klints: Thank you for having me! It’s a pleasure to discuss this pivotal moment for LA.
Time.news Editor: Let’s dive into it! Recently, we learned that Artis Pūce has been appointed as the sole leader of LA, moving away from the multi-co-chair model they had adopted. What do you think prompted this decision?
Anna Klints: It seems that the party is looking for stronger leadership, especially as they prepare for the municipal elections in Riga next year. After previous challenges, including a failure to enter parliament during the last elections, this shift could signal an intent to present a more unified front. Artis Pūce’s history and experience, particularly as a former councilor and minister, may instill more confidence in voters.
Time.news Editor: Interesting point. Pūce has had a complicated history with the party, including his resignation from the chairmanship four years ago. How might his past impact his current leadership?
Anna Klints: That’s a critical aspect to consider. His previous resignation stemmed from a controversial incident regarding the illegal use of a parking lot, which definitely tarnished his image. However, that experience also showcases his resilience. By returning to a leadership position, he may want to redefine his narrative and showcase growth—both personally and for the party.
Time.news Editor: It appears they are not just banking on his leadership alone. The new board includes prominent members such as the Member of the European Parliament, Ivars Ijabs, and former Minister of Defense, Artis Pabriks. What does this diversified leadership say about the party’s strategy moving forward?
Anna Klints: The inclusion of experienced politicians suggests a strategic effort to bring a balance of perspectives and expertise. It signals to constituents that LA is serious about governance and is looking to strengthen their credibility with a robust team. Moreover, bringing in deputies means Pūce can maintain leadership while also allowing others to share the spotlight, which could help foster collaboration within the party.
Time.news Editor: With elections on the horizon, having credible figures in deputy roles could enhance their campaign efforts. Do you think this new leadership structure will resonate well with voters?
Anna Klints: It’s a possibility, but it ultimately depends on how effectively they communicate their vision and how they address past mistakes. Voters tend to gravitate towards authenticity and accountability, so if Pūce can articulate a clear, compelling agenda while acknowledging past controversies, they might regain public trust and support.
Time.news Editor: As we watch these developments unfold, what should we keep an eye on in terms of LA’s campaign strategy?
Anna Klints: Definitely the messaging and how they choose to engage with voters. Their approach to key issues like environmental policies—given Pūce’s background—could be a significant focus. We should also watch for how they handle debates and public forums, as these will be crucial for shaping public perception leading up to the elections.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Anna, for your insights! It’s going to be fascinating to see how LA evolves and prepares for the elections. We appreciate your time and expertise.
Anna Klints: Thank you! I look forward to discussing the outcomes in the future.
