Center Party chairman Jüri Ratas said at a meeting on Tuesday with Jõhvi parish elder Maris Toomel, Sillamäe mayor Tõnis Kalberg and Narva-Jõesuu mayor Maxim Ilyin that Eda-Virumaa needs clear signals, not redundant bureaucracy.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the problems and opportunities for the development of the region, which should be addressed in the coming years at the level of municipalities, the government and the Riigikogu. They also discussed the idea of creating the post of special representative of Ida-Virumaa, which was announced at the coalition talks between reformists, social democrats and the Eesti 200 party, the press service of the Center Party told BNS.

According to Ratas, such meetings are very important, as the presence of the state in the region should increase, not decrease. “This cannot be facilitated by the growth of bureaucracy. The Ida-Virumaa region needs clear signals regarding the prospects for the development of the oil shale industry, the construction and renovation of apartments, as well as how the state will help in the implementation of certain investment projects.”

Member of the Riigikogu Marija Jufereva-Skuratovski, who participated in the meeting, stressed that politicians are usually accused of visiting Ida-Virumaa on the eve of the elections, and at other times, as if they forget about the region. “Ida-Virumaa has always been very important for our party, and I am convinced that even in the opposition it is possible to defend the interests of the region. But for this you need to be aware of the problems and wishes of local residents!”
