Jupol’s attempt to provide a new working day to the members of the Police Intervention Units, the riot police, has been rejected by the courts. The union appealed through contentious-administrative proceedings against the fact that the General Directorate of Police (DGP) had not developed the December 2015 standard for riot police that affected all police officers, but the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid not only has rejected Jupol’s appeal for the riot police, but has ordered the organization to pay costs for not appreciating that its claim even presented “serious factual or legal doubts.”
The origin of the claim is the rule that was approved in 2015 on the working day for all members of the National Police Corps. This rule regulates the schedules, the cadences of service provision or the compensation received with overtime. The text itself already warned that police units with a peculiar regime would need specific development. The riot police spend many days outside their destination city, since they are a force that is mobilized based on the “mass control” required by the authorities.
