The prefect of Guayas, Marcela Aguiñaga, expressed her support for the mayor of Guayaquil, Aquiles Álvarez, after the Attorney General’s Office carried out raids in one of his companies as part of the investigation into alleged fuel smuggling in the case known as Triple A.

On the night of Tuesday, July 23, 2024, Aguiñaga shared a video on his social media showing his solidarity and questioning justice in the country.

On his X account, Aguiñaga wrote: “There is no room for disputes or for a justice system that pursues people and not crimes. Solidarity, Aquiles Álvarez, let the truth shine.”

In the video, the prefect of Guayas shared a message in which she expressed her concerns about the current situation in Guayas and Ecuador, and reaffirmed her commitment to work for the province.

Below is the full text of his message:

“Guayaquil, Guayas and Ecuador are not doing well. I repeat it. First Guayas and then politics. You elected me to work and that is what I am doing. This province is my home. My people live here, as do yours. And I want it to do well. Politics has those paths that are sometimes so complicated to navigate. So much misery and infamy, but also wonderful things, like the happy face of a mother who is served, of a mother who is cared for, of a father who found a job.

So that is why I continue to be involved in politics. However, in recent times, the cloudy, dark, and strange Ecuador has made one lose faith in many things. And above all, in justice. Justice, which today more than ever I believe is politicized, as it has always been. Politics should be part of that full exercise that ensures the well-being of the people. And justice, hand in hand, of course, should pursue crimes and not people.

What is happening today with the Mayor of Guayaquil hurts us and pains us. My solidarity, dear Aquiles. I am sure that the truth will shine through. And that you will have, and should have, a technical, legal and fair process. That is what we all hope for. I repeat it once again, we are not doing well.

Families suffer every day. There are entire families who emigrate, leaving the country. Why? Because they have lost hope. There are loved ones who go to a restaurant for dinner and are murdered. There are taxi drivers who go out to get bread for their families and are killed in the middle of the night. That is the Ecuador they try to make us believe is the everyday one, and it is not. It should not be. And that is why I continue working from Guayas.

To recover our country, we must begin with our province. With Guayas, with it, everything. Absolutely everything. My love, my work, my effort and my passion. And I hope that today the politicians hear that we need unity, maturity and common sense in such dark and grey times that we are experiencing in Ecuador.”

The Triple A case involves an investigation into alleged fuel smuggling, in which one of Mayor Aquiles Álvarez’s companies was raided by the Prosecutor’s Office.
