The Minister of Justice in the Government of National Unity, Halima Ibrahim, rejected the report of the High Commissioner on the implementation of the decision to provide technical support to Libya in the field of human rights.

During her participation in the 56th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, the minister stressed that she would not accept anything that would affect Libya’s sovereignty.

The Minister reiterated Libya’s commitment to protecting and promoting human rights, and its readiness to cooperate with the relevant international mechanisms in this regard.

In her speech, she pointed out that the human rights situation has improved greatly as a result of the many steps taken by the Government of National Unity in this area, including the establishment of the National Human Rights Committee after it had been suspended for years, in addition to the establishment of the National Mechanism for Writing Human Rights Reports and the International Humanitarian Law Committee.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, stated that the stalled political process in Libya, which has been hijacked by actors whose interests align with preserving the status quo, is destroying the hopes of Libyans for a more stable, open and prosperous society.

Turk condemned the increase in arbitrary arrests, detentions, enforced disappearances and detention-related violations in Libya, noting the acceleration of targeting political opponents.

The UN mission documented at least 60 cases of arbitrary detention of people peacefully exercising their right to express their political opinions.
