Toronto: Bad days are about to begin for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. According to a recent survey, Trudeau’s Liberal Party is losing the trust of voters. Not only this, people have also lost faith in the New Democratic Party led by pro-Khalistan Jagmeet Singh, Trudeau’s ally in the government. This is raising doubts about Trudeau’s leadership before the general elections to be held next year. There is deep resentment among the people against the Liberal Party for not managing the Covid pandemic properly, rising inflation in the country and the housing crisis. Canadians are also angry that their government did not take a strong stand in the Russia-Ukraine war and Israel’s attack on the Gaza Strip.

Support for Trudeau’s party is declining rapidly

According to a Ledger poll conducted for the National Post, if the election were held today, the NDP’s support would drop by one percentage point, from 18 per cent during the 2021 federal election to 17 per cent. Significantly, the majority of those surveyed felt their opinion of the NDP and Jagmeet Singh had ‘worsened’, with only 20 per cent viewing him more favourably than the previous 32 per cent.

Trudeau’s party suffered a major setback

The NDP faced troubling signs during June’s federal byelection in Toronto—St. Paul’s leadership, where its vote share dropped from 17 per cent to 11 per cent, a catastrophic result for Trudeau’s party, which lost a seat it had held since 1993. Jagmeet Singh took over the NDP leadership in October 2017. Prior to his leadership, the NDP had 44 seats in the House of Commons and a vote share of about 20 per cent in the last federal election. By 2021, these numbers had dropped significantly, with the NDP electing 25 MPs and garnering a vote share of about 18 per cent.

Will Jagmeet Singh leave Trudeau?

“We see this as a message that people are sending. They are disappointed with Trudeau. They are fed up with Trudeau, and they are disappointed with the Liberal Party, and they have reasons for that,” Jagmeet Singh said last week. However, the Trudeau government, which has been reduced to a minority after entering into a “supply and confidence agreement” in March 2022, is surviving on the support of Jagmeet Singh’s NDP. While Jagmeet Singh is mum on whether he will continue to support Trudeau, he said things are getting worse for the government.

What would be the result if elections were held now?

According to the overall Leger poll, the Conservative Party has 41 per cent support, far ahead of the Liberals. The Liberals are seen getting only 27 per cent support. If the election were held now, the Conservatives would have won 218 seats, while Trudeau’s Liberal Party, which is currently in power, would have got only 67 seats. Trudeau’s party recently suffered a major defeat in a special election for the Toronto district it has held for three decades. Opposition Conservative candidate Don Stewart won the Toronto-St. Paul’s district by about 600 votes, 42.1 per cent more than the Liberal candidate’s 40.5 per cent.
