K. Harris’ election campaign claims to have been targeted by foreign hackers

The news comes days after rival Donald Trump’s campaign suggested it had been hacked by Iran.

“In July, the FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) informed the campaign’s legal and security teams that we were the target of a foreign influence operation,” a Harris campaign official told AFP.

“We have strong cyber security measures in place and have no record of any security breaches in our systems,” he added.

The campaign did not say which foreign country might be responsible, but noted that it remains in contact with law enforcement agencies.

The US State Department warned Iran on Monday of the consequences of meddling in the election, after Trump’s campaign announced it had been hacked.

The Trump campaign suggested on Saturday that Iran was responsible for a breach that leaked documents to reporters, including a study used to evaluate vice presidential candidate JD Vance. She warned the media against republishing the documents, saying it would favor America’s enemies.

It’s a different tone than in 2016, when Trump said at a press conference that he hoped Russia would “discover” Hillary Clinton’s emails. The remarks were widely seen as a spur to further hacks targeting his election rival.

US intelligence has concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to support Trump.
