K. Harris will deliver a speech at the US Democratic National Convention

A little earlier, the Democrats at the convention officially confirmed K. Harris as the party’s candidate for the presidential election to be held in November.

Harris, who entered the race just a month ago after President Joe Biden abandoned his bid for a second term, will have her biggest chance yet to win over voters when she gives a speech in Chicago expected to formally accept her party’s nomination for president.

While her campaign has united and energized Democrats, Harris still faces the task of winning over moderates and undecided voters.

Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, gave the keynote address Wednesday. He praised Harris as a “strong” politician and said she would “fight for your freedom to live the way you want to live”.

Harris has made health care, and reproductive rights in particular, a major issue of her campaign, saying she would restrict access to abortion and contraception during a second term for Republican Donald Trump.

Trump, whose lead in the polls has disappeared, has called Harris a “radical left-wing nutcase” and a “failed vice president.” He attacks her positions on immigration and the economy, claiming that if she wins, the stock market will crash.

Harris, who has Jamaican and Indian roots, would become the first female president in US history if she wins the election.

Prominent figures in Democratic politics have expressed their support for Harris in the first days of the convention. Former President Barack Obama said the “baton has been passed” to Harris and called Trump “dangerous.” Former First Lady Michelle Obama, for her part, said that “hope is returning.”
