Riding the spring breeze, professional soccer K-League 1 is continuing its box office success. As of the end of the 4th round of K League 1, an average of 14,241 spectators visited the stadium, the largest ever.

According to the Korea Professional Football League on the 2nd, a total of 341,795 paid spectators attended the 24 games as of the 4th round of the 2024 season K-League 1, with an average of 14,241 people per game.

This is an all-time record as of the end of the 4th round of K League 1, and the largest number of fans have visited the stadium since the 2018 season when paid attendance counting was introduced.

Last year, the average number of spectators through the fourth round was 11,425, which increased by about 3,000. The federation expressed an encouraging response, saying, “It is characterized by not only a flashy opening effect, but also a steady average number of spectators.”

In fact, 51,670 fans visited Seoul World Cup Stadium for the FC Seoul-Incheon match in the second round of the 2023 season, setting the record for the largest attendance for a single K League 1 game since the promotion and relegation system.

Furthermore, six teams, equivalent to half of the 12 teams in K League 1, recorded the largest attendance at their home opening game, including Ulsan HD (28,683 people), Jeonbuk Hyundai (24,758 people), and Gwangju FC (7,805 people).

The federation evaluated that the fact that the increase in the number of spectators was not limited to existing popular clubs such as Seoul, Jeonbuk, and Ulsan was a characteristic of the early 2024 season’s success.

Gwangju’s home opening game sold out in just 2 minutes and 30 seconds, and Gangwon FC also sold out its home game for the first time in the era of paid attendance statistics in the fourth round against Seoul last weekend. Daegu FC continues to sell out all three home games this season.

The federation cited factors such as △ last season’s success continuing stably this season and △ active marketing activities by each club as factors for the increase in the number of spectators.

Last year, the K League recorded a total paid audience of 3,011,509, including 2,447,147 in K League 1 and 564,362 in K League 2, exceeding 3 million spectators for the first time since counting paid spectators.

In addition, FC Seoul’s recruitment of star players such as Jesse Lingard, a former England national team striker who played for major European clubs, greatly helped the success. Seoul operates ‘Lingard Zone,’ a store dedicated to Lingard’s uniforms.

The federation took a positive view, saying, “Ulsan and Jeonbuk actively promoted F&B and food trucks on game days, increasing the amount of food available in stadiums, and all clubs are actively running various home game events and spectator participation events.”
