Eight students died when their speeding rental car crashed into the back of a parked lorry on the Kaipamangalam national highway in Thrissur.
Tragedy on the National Highway and the Victims
A late-night journey turned into a catastrophic tragedy on the Kaipamangalam Panampikunnu national highway. At 11:42 p.m. on Friday, a car traveling at high speeds smashed directly into the rear of a stationary goods lorry, obliterating the vehicle. The impact was so severe that emergency responders had to cut the vehicle open to extract the passengers trapped inside.
All eight occupants of the car, students at a private engineering college in Dindigul, lost their lives in the crash. The victims were identified as V. Vishwa, 20, from Salem; G. Santhosh, 20, from Madurai; Prasanna, 20, from Madurai; M. Muraleekrishnan, 20, from Madurai; I. Surya, 20, from Dindigul; K. Yuvasanjith, 20, from Dindigul; J. Joshua Hilson, 20, from Dindigul; and N. Jeeva, 20, from Dindigul. Yuvasanjith was driving the automobile at the time of the collision.
Celebration Turned Sour Before the Journey
The journey itself began as a celebration. Santhosh had recently purchased a new car, prompting the group to head out on the road. Because his own new vehicle was unavailable, the group instead rented a car that was one month old.
Hours before the fatal collision, the group had stopped at a hotel in Talikkulam. According to local reporting, an altercation and scuffle occurred at the establishment between the students and others present. Learning that the Vadanappally police were en route to the scene, the group hurriedly climbed back into their car and fled.
Lorry Driver in Custody and Investigation Details
Authorities moved quickly in the aftermath of the crash. Police took the lorry driver into custody, identified as 34-year-old Tukaram Kamble from Pune, who had fled the scene immediately after the accident occurred.
A special investigation team headed by the Kodungallur DySP is currently questioning Kamble to determine his exact liability regarding the parked vehicle. During questioning, the driver claimed he was alone in the vehicle because there was no cleaner with him. He stated that he had parked the lorry tight against the right side of the road and was sleeping inside when the car plowed into the back of it. It was actually the individuals sleeping inside the roadside lorry who woke up and alerted local residents to the disaster.
Forensic Tests and Safety Concerns
As investigators piece together the timeline, postmortem examinations have raised serious questions about the students’ condition prior to the crash. The head of the forensic department at Thrissur Medical College indicated that the preliminary assessment suggests the victims had consumed alcohol. Forensic samples have been dispatched to a laboratory for broader confirmation, including specialized screenings for synthetic drug usage.
Official reports and local observations point to multiple contributing factors on the roadway. An RTO report confirmed that the rental car was traveling at excessive speeds down the straight, undulating stretch of the highway. Concurrently, local residents raised allegations that proper directional warning boards were missing near the parked commercial vehicle, setting the stage for the catastrophic impact.
