Potsdam – A Christmas nativity scene from Kaiser Wilhelm II has returned to Potsdam after more than 100 years. The work of art will be exhibited in the grotto hall of the New Palace for a few weeks, a spokesman for the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Berlin-Brandenburg Foundation said on Friday. This means that the loan will return to its historical location.

The nativity scene by the sculptor Sebastian Osterrieder was given to the emperor around 1907 and was set up in the grotto hall every year until 1917. “After the end of the monarchy in 1918, the work of art went into William II’s exile in the Netherlands in November 1920,” said the spokesman. The trail was lost here. It was not until the 1980s that the nativity scene appeared publicly again at an auction. According to the spokesman, a buyer from Bavaria purchased the work of art. It is now usually exhibited in the Abensberg City Museum in Bavaria.
