jpnn.com – The Indonesian Anti-Corruption Committee (KAKI) urged the Democratic Party and Golkar to withdraw their support for the prospective gubernatorial candidate for North Sulawesi (Bacagub Sulut) Elly Engelbert Lasut, a former corruption convict.

KAKI General Chair Arifin Nur Cahyono assessed that the involvement of former corruption convicts in the 2024 Regional Head Elections (Pilkada) would have a negative impact on the candidates.

According to him, regional head candidates who have a black record under the law, including corruption, will have their integrity doubted by the public.

“KAKI considers it unethical for a political party to nominate a former corruption convict as a regional head. This means that the political party does not seem to support the creation of a government that is free from corruption,” said Arifin in a press release, Thursday (22/8).

The impact, he said, is that the emergence of prospective regional head candidates who are former corrupt convicts is doubtful that they will be able to carry out their mandate well, are easily attacked, are less trusted, and it is feared that if elected they will commit corruption again.

“Of course, if a regional head who is a former corruption convict is involved in corruption again, it will become a public record for corrupt political parties,” he said.

Therefore, regarding the former corruption convict Elly Engelbert Lasut who was supported by the Democrat and Golkar Parties in the North Sulawesi Pilkada, Arifin said that the Golkar and Democrat Parties were not political parties that had a mission to create a government that was free from corruption.

However, the fact that Elly Lasut was once a convict in a corruption case involving fictitious travel orders (SPPD) and education funds for the National Foster Parents Movement (GNOTA) was sentenced to seven years in prison. Then, she was released in November 2014.
