Wild Boar Nuisance Disrupting Farming in Kallara

The local community in Kallara is facing a severe wild boar nuisance that is disrupting farming activities. Despite special permission granted to Panchayats to shoot and kill the pigs, no action is being taken, leading to widespread infestation in the farms.

The forest department has left the responsibility of controlling the wild boar nuisance to the Panchayats. However, the Panchayats have not been actively pursuing the task. This lack of vigilance has led to an increase in the wild boar population, causing extensive damage to farms in areas such as Kallara, Pangod, Pulimath, Nellanad, Vamanapuram, and Pullampara.

To combat the issue, local body chairpersons have been bestowed with special powers as Honorary Wildlife Wardens, enabling them to legally kill wild boars. However, there is a lack of clarity on the measures required to cover up the killing of pigs, making it difficult for Panchayats to carry out the task effectively.

The responsibility of disposing of the pig carcasses falls on the property owners, adding to the complexity of the situation.

Local residents are demanding that the responsibility of killing the pigs be transferred from the local self-government bodies to the Forest Department, or that authorities take steps to provide clearer guidelines and financial support for the task. They argue that the vagueness of the order, coupled with the lack of financial support, has resulted in unprocessed pig carcasses that are being used for illegal meat trafficking.

It has been reported that meat trafficking gangs are actively involved in processing the shot pig meat, which eventually ends up in big hotels in cities. Additionally, groups in the area have been involved in trapping wild boars and using them for meat.

Moreover, the shooters appointed by the Panchayats are facing challenges. The fixed compensation for shooting a pig is minimal and often takes more than a day to accomplish. Furthermore, the scarcity and high cost of ammunition have made it difficult for the shooters to receive decent wages, discouraging new entrants and causing existing shooters to drop out.

The situation calls for urgent attention from relevant authorities to clarify guidelines, provide financial support, and take steps to address the wild boar nuisance, which has become a major concern for the community in Kallara.
