jpnn.comEAST KALIMANTAN – PT Bumi Resources, Tbk (BUMI) together with its subsidiary PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) is committed to preserving the habitat and providing new homes for orangutans on post-mining land through the reclamation process.

Orangutan conservation is considered important not only because they are protected animals, but also because of their role as guardians of the balance of nature and biodiversity.

This animal has a significant contribution in supporting the survival of other species in its range.

“Orangutans are called umbrella species because orangutans maintain the balance of the forest ecosystem and become seed distributors. From research, the feces of this animal can produce 14 types of plants. The role of orangutans as endemic animals is extraordinary,” said KPC Environment Manager, Kiagus Nirwan on the sidelines of BUMI activities at the LIKE 2 KLHK Festival.

“Therefore, we ensure that reclamation activities are carried out expansively for a new home for orangutans,” added Nirwan.

Maintaining biodiversity is an important indicator of the success of the mine reclamation process. Therefore, the sustainability of the orangutan population, which plays a vital role as an umbrella species in its ecosystem, is considered worthy of being one of the main concerns.

Mining reclamation is the process of restoring and rehabilitating land used in mining activities.

This process aims to reduce the impact on the environment that has been exploited, so that the condition of the soil, water, and vegetation, as well as the ecosystem functions that have been disturbed, can be restored.

KPC is committed to preserving habitat and providing new homes for orangutans on post-mining land through the reclamation process.
