By making biodegradable cutlery out of banana leaves, tamarind seeds, husk and peanut shells, Kalyan Kumar from Coimbatore is earning handsomely and saving the environment as well.

When the Tamil Nadu government launched the ‘Meendam Manjappai’ scheme to promote cloth bags instead of plastic, Kalyan Kumar from Coimbatore took a unique initiative to convert the opportunity into employment. He built a machine in his own factory that makes a variety of eco-friendly cutlery.

He only uses bio waste to make it. Such as rice, wheat bran, peanut shells, tamarind seeds, banana leaves etc. Kalyan’s single machine transforms all these wastes into excellent products.

At one point of time, due to some family problem, Kalyan could not complete his BBA studies. Later, he started working in his father’s factory making small machines.

In the year 2017, he got the idea of making a machine as an alternative to plastic. At that time, most of the people used to make plates only from areca leaves. But Kalyan went a step ahead and started using the other vest as well.

The cost of the machines made by him ranges from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 35 lakh. Kalyan says the smaller machines are manual with lever controls, which can make more than 1,000 cups of tea daily. Whereas the expensive machine is fully automatic and can make 10000 cups of tea per day.

Today Kalyan himself is selling 1 million cups of tea every month. He believes that this is only the beginning. In the coming time, he wants to train others as well so that more and more people use it and people everywhere have an eco-friendly alternative to plastic.
