Asked whether the United States should use military force in the event of a potential attack by mainland China on Taiwan, Harris said, “I won’t discuss hypothetical questions.” “We must adhere to the ‘one China’ policy. But this includes supporting Taiwan’s self-defense capabilities, including what we need to do to ensure freedom in the Taiwan Strait. We need to keep lines of communication open with China, especially military-to-military.” , she added.
According to Harris, the United States “must win the competition for the 21st century with China.” “We must be able to compete and win. We should not strive for conflict. But we must understand that there are criteria by which we must act. Among them, for example, is that we must protect the interests of American business,” she added she.
Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when the remnants of the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled there after being defeated in the Chinese Civil War. Beijing considers Taiwan one of the provinces of the People’s Republic of China.
The United States severed diplomatic relations with Taiwan in 1979 and established them with the People’s Republic of China. While recognizing the “one China” policy, Washington at the same time continues to maintain contacts with the Taipei administration. The US is Taiwan’s main arms supplier. According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the total amount of US military supplies to Taiwan over several years exceeded $70 billion.
