In a post on the Truth Social app, Trump said he was open to a debate with Harris on the conservative Fox News network on Sept. 4, but declined to participate in a previously scheduled debate on ABC.

Harris’ staff dismissed the idea as “games.”

“Donald Trump is freaking out and trying to get out of a debate he’s already agreed to and is running straight to Fox News to save him,” Harris campaign communications director Michael Tyler said in a statement. “He has to … appear in the debate on September 10, which he has already committed to.”

The bid to confront Harris at the network, which has long backed him, is the latest effort by Trump to regain the initiative in a campaign that has so far been entirely focused on rematching Joe Biden, 81, before he dramatically withdrew from the race.

Harris, then 59, breathed life into the Democratic base almost overnight.

She has won a lot of support, reassembled the team that helped Barack Obama to two historic election victories and neutralized the strong lead that Trump, 78, appeared to have over Biden in polls.

Harris’ rapid entry into the presidential race derailed Trump’s campaign, and he is now the oldest presidential candidate in US history.

The dynamic is also changed by the fact that K. Harris is running to become the first female president and the first leader of the country of black and Indian origin.
