MADRID, 3 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The German cyclist Lennard Kämna (BORA-hansgrohe) won stage 9 of the Tour of Spain this Sunday, disputed over 184.5 kilometers starting in Cartagena and finishing at the unprecedented Collado de la Cruz de Caravaca, where the Slovenian Primoz Roglic ( Jumbo-Visma) did not ‘bite’ two seconds that seemed to have scratched in the general classification, thanks to another controversial outcome.

Kämna completed a tough mountainous day in 4:34:03, but with the times again in question. The organization of La Vuelta, upon seeing a landslide of mud and stones near the finish line, took the references 50 meters before the sign announcing the final two kilometers. And even after the stage, he rectified the situation with respect to Primoz Roglic.

The wind influenced everything, with fans that the Jumbo-Visma knew how to deal with, but affecting important men in the peloton. The Spaniards Enric Mas (Movistar Team) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) soon found themselves cut off, in tow to recover their place and their good feelings from the previous days. The movement of the Jumbo-Visma formed a group of only 12 runners, and in which all their bullets had entered for the general.

The American Sepp Kuss, wearer of the red leader’s jersey, was there together with the aforementioned Primoz Roglic and the Dane Jonas Vingegaard, as well as the defending champion, the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step). This caused the first hour of the race at over 50 km/h where the Movistar Team, UAE Team Emirates and Bahrain Victorious worked for almost 50 kilometers to be able to neutralize the cut.

Amanuel Gehbreigzabhier (Lidl-Trek) together with Kämna himself, Jonathan Caicedo (EF Education-EasyPost), Matteo Sobrero (Jayco AlUla), Rubén Fernández (Cofidis), Chris Hamilton (Team DSM-firmenich), Dani Navarro (Burgos-BH) and Jon Barrenetxea (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA) curdled the day’s break, after 70 kilometers already traveled.

The ascent to Casas de La Marina / La Perdiz (1st category) was coming, just after the break of the group after the crazy start. But that small truce gave way to more fans, wreaking havoc in the central part of the stage and sifting through the group of favourites, who left behind Lenny Martínez (Groupama-FDJ) and Wouter Poels (Bahrain Victorious).

Their teams chased the ‘cockies’ for more than 30 kilometers until a new reunification, just over 50 kilometers from the finish line. So yes, only the final ascent to Collado de la Cruz de Caravaca was missing, where the eight escapees arrived with a distance of close to four minutes.

In the Murcian port, Kämna showed skill with a strong start five kilometers from the finish line that launched him solo towards victory. The Italian Matteo Sobrero kept his pulse for a few metres, but finally he was far from the German. After having won stages in the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, Kämna entered the select group of cyclists with success in the ‘big three’.

Among the favorites for the general classification, those times taken with controversy did not leave differences after the rectification, so Kuss kept the lead before the first day of rest. Looking ahead to next Tuesday, a 25.8-kilometer individual time trial through the streets of Valladolid will start La Vuelta again.
