The English national team has won its second game in the Nations League. Against Finland, it was Harry Kane who shone.
A brace from Harry Kane gave the English national team their second win in the second game of the current Nations League season. The Bayern star put the “Three Lions” ahead against Finland after just under an hour (57th minute) and added another goal around fifteen minutes before the end (76th). The result was a comfortable 2-0 win at home in Wembley Stadium.
Kane rewarded himself with his two goals. The 31-year-old celebrated an anniversary against Finland: Kane played his 100th international match in his country’s jersey. Before kick-off, the goalscorer was duly celebrated and awarded. After his brace against Finland, he has now scored 68 goals for England. This means he is further extending his lead as the nation’s record goalscorer.
Kane’s award was not the only highlight before the game. A few seconds before kick-off, there was a highly emotional moment in the arena. The late former national coach Sven-Göran Eriksson was honored in the pouring rain at Wembley. Read more about it here.
The victory puts England in second place in Group Two of the Nations League with a goal difference of 4:0 in League B after two games. Greece also has six points. The 2004 European champions beat Ireland 2:0 in Dublin.
Nevertheless, interim coach Lee Carsley should have strong arguments on his side for continuing to work as national coach thanks to the two convincing victories. The former Irish national team player had initially taken over from long-time national coach Gareth Southgate, who resigned after the European Championships in Germany.
