New Delhi: The Central government has rejected a request to allow foreign airlines to operate services from Kannur airport. The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has said that the services of Indian companies should be increased to meet the demand.

Kerala demanded that foreign airlines be allowed to operate services from Kannur, Kerala’s fourth international airport. But this was not accepted.

Indian Airlines currently operate overseas services from Kannur. The Center said it would increase the number of services as and when required. The Union Ministry of Civil Aviation said the move was to protect Indian airlines.

Kerala was of the view that passengers would benefit more if more foreign airlines operated services from Kannur. Companies like Etihad and Emirates need to be licensed. Kerala had also demanded a connecting flight from Kannur to Europe.
