The 1983 World Cup-winning captain, speaking with the Times of India, acknowledged Sooryavanshi’s undeniable talent but emphasized that the young cricketer has a long journey ahead. To illustrate the volatility of a professional cricket career, Kapil Dev pointed to the trajectory of former Indian batter Vinod Kambli. Despite his immense promise and early success in the 1990s, Kambli’s career did not sustain its initial momentum, concluding with only 17 Test matches and 104 ODIs.

Kapil Dev Emphasizes Managing Wealth and Fame for Young Athletes

Kapil Dev argued that for a young athlete, managing the transition in lifestyle and mindset that accompanies sudden wealth and fame is more critical than immediate performance statistics. "Vaibhav is 15 years old. He explained that as a player’s circumstances change, their approach to the game often shifts, and observing how a player handles these developments over the next two years is essential.

The veteran all-rounder noted that while fans are always searching for the "next big name" to follow the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma, he is personally interested in identifying a talent capable of filling those roles for a sustained 15-year career. The discourse surrounding Sooryavanshi also drew comparisons to Prithvi Shaw, whose early career success was eventually hampered by off-field challenges and disciplinary issues that complicated his path in international cricket.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 2026 Indian Premier League record

Sooryavanshi, who made his T20 International debut against England in July 2026, became the youngest player to represent India in international cricket. While he experienced a difficult start in England, he showed improvement during the tour of Zimbabwe. Across his eight T20I appearances to date, he has scored 246 runs at an average of 30.75 and a strike rate of 186.36.

His rise followed a standout performance in the 2026 Indian Premier League, where he played for the Rajasthan Royals. During that season, Sooryavanshi scored 776 runs in 16 matches, including one century and five half-centuries. He set a record for the most sixes in a single IPL season, hitting 72, surpassing the previous record of 59 held by Chris Gayle from 2012.

Indian squad selection for the West Indies series

Currently, Sooryavanshi is part of the Indian squad for the five-match T20 series against the West Indies. Although he did not feature in the playing eleven for the first match in Lucknow, reports suggest the team management may consider him to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma for the second match in Ranchi, particularly as Sanju Samson has struggled for form, recording only 29 runs in his last four innings.
