Former Judicial Police Director Released from Prison in Mexico
On Tuesday night, Hugo Adolfo Karam, the former director of the Judicial Police of the Office of the Attorney General in the State of Puebla, was released from prison in Cancun, Quintana Roo. This came after his defense obtained an injunction, securing his release on precautionary measures.
Journalist Lydia Cacho, who has accused Karam of torture, wrote on her X account that Karam is the owner of a security company with gun permits and special guards. She alleged that they had been denouncing these practices for years.
Following his release, Karam met with his wife and legal representatives.
In 2005, Karam was charged with participating in the arrest and torture of Lydia Cacho to expose a pedophilia network in Mexico. He was not arrested until July 13, 2023, when he was apprehended in Boca del Rio, Veracruz.
Pedophilia Allegations and the “Demons of Eden” Book
The release of Karam coincides with renewed attention to the controversial book “The Demons of Eden,” which investigates a pedophilia ring in Mexico. The book’s author, Lydia Cacho, claims that Karam was involved in the torture and arrest of journalists who exposed the network.
The book also implicates several prominent figures, including Mario Marín, a former governor of Puebla, and Kamel Nacif, a businessman known as “The King of Denim.”
Government Response and Alleged Cover-up
According to reports, Karam received orders from the then-governor of Puebla to issue an arrest warrant against Cacho after the book’s publication. Phone recordings between Nacif and Marin suggest that the latter supported the businessman’s efforts to silence Cacho.
