The end of the marriage is followed by inner contemplation.

Karl-Theodor Buhl-Freiherr von und zu Guttenberg (51) is currently walking his personal Way of St. James. The former Secretary of Defense is traveling in the forests of Montana in the northwest of the USA. “Without internet. No cell phone reception. The nearest village is two hours away. A satellite phone for emergencies,” he writes on the social network LinkedIn.

In order to publish this news, Guttenberg drove to the small town.

He doesn’t mention his broken love with his wife Stephanie (46) with a single syllable. Nevertheless, zu Guttenberg allows a glimpse into his soul. Because the time out is “a re-encounter with a reality that had become alien to me.”

In his solitude, the former star politician remembered three sentences from a deceased acquaintance. “I had always admired him for his unwavering composure in the many storms of life.”

Guttenberg asked him how he maintained this inner peace. The friend said: “Don’t subject yourself to other people’s emotions. Never respond spontaneously to notifications and letters that affect you.” The former federal minister seems to want to adopt this.

Even before his break began, zu Guttenberg had written very movingly on LinkedIn about saying goodbye to his father Enoch zu Guttenberg (†71). The famous conductor died in 2018. “Since then, gratitude for what we have experienced has increasingly overshadowed the difficulty of letting go.”

Other sentences also fit well with his failed marriage: “We cling to dreams that constantly have to give way to realities.” And: “It is certainly not wrong to create dreams for life. But it makes no sense to perceive their correction as a defeat. What prevents us from seeing a farewell to life’s dreams as an impulse? Every moment you say goodbye to a new life.”

The inscription on a sign hanging in a restaurant in the Montana region could also fit his new life. “And the World Keeps Spinning.” To Guttenberg: “How trivial. How true.”

This “calmness” could become the motto for his new life.
