The Indian Express English daily reported yesterday that the Karnataka High Court had argued that Islamic students should be allowed to wear the hijab in the uniform of their uniforms in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools run by the Indian government, just as the state government educational institutions in Karnataka are allowed to wear the hijab.
The demand was made on behalf of the students when the case of junior college students from Udupi against the ban on hijab imposed by the Karnataka government came up for hearing before a bench headed by Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Roy Awasthi yesterday.
“Islamic students are allowed to wear headscarves in the same color as their trousers in Kendriya Vidyalaya schools,” argued Devat Kamath, a leading senior lawyer for the students.
He pointed out that Islamic and Sikh students are allowed to wear the veil in Kendriya Vidyalayas.
The trial is set to begin today (Tuesday).
