Kaspersky Lab warns of risks in dating apps

Dating services have become more secure from a technical point of view, but privacy problems remain, Kaspersky Lab found out. The company analyzed nine dating apps – Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid, Mamba, Pure, Feeld, Her, Happn, and Badoo.

If in 2017 it was possible to intercept sent data in four out of nine applications, and many used the unencrypted HTTP protocol, then in 2021 the situation improved: none of the applications uses HTTP, and data is not transmitted if the protocol is insecure. But many services allow you to link an account with a profile on a social network, which makes it easier to find a person in it, if the privacy settings are not enabled, they say at Kaspersky Lab.

In addition, users of Happn, Her, Bumble and Tinder are required to indicate their location, and Mamba shows it to the nearest meter. This and other personal information can be used to harass on the Internet or publish data about a person without his knowledge and consent, warn in Kaspersky Lab.

The Mamba application monitors the safety of its users, objected the CEO of the company Andrey Bronetsky: “Therefore, we do not indicate their exact location, but only the distance between one user and another, that is, no one can determine exactly where a person is, since the direction of this distance is unknown “. Moreover, in the distance, according to him, there is a slight inaccuracy. “For all the time, we have never received comments from users that they feel unsafe or anxious about the presence of such information in the profile. Otherwise, of course, we would have worked it out, ”he stressed.

As Kommersant reported, in May Russians spent tens of times more money on promoting their accounts in dating applications than a year earlier, according to the YuMoney payment system. Experts associate interest with “post-pandemic euphoria”
