A Kate Winslet was furious after receiving what she called “really not very nice” advice during the filming of a swimsuit scene in her new film, Lee.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK, the Titanic actress revealed that a member of the crew suggested she ”sit up straighter” to “hide his rolls” in front of the camera.
There’s a part where Lee is sitting on a bench in a bikini – he recalled. ”And one of the crew came over between takes and said, ‘Maybe you should sit up straighter.’ So they wouldn’t see my rolls? Absolutely not! It was intentional, you know?”
Asked if it bothered her to appear “imperfect” on screen, Winslet replied: “The opposite. I’m proud of it because it’s my life on my face, and that’s what matters. I wouldn’t think of covering it up.”
She then added: “I think people know better than to say, ‘Maybe you better do something about those wrinkles.’ I am more comfortable with myself with each passing year. This allows me to let other people’s opinions evaporate.”
The film, which debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, stars Kate Winslet as Lee Miller, a renowned World War II photographer and journalist.
The actress also lent herself to a nude sequence, about which she declared: “I had to be very brave to let my body be the softest version of itself and not hide from it.”
She further shared that during production, many male executives patronized her as she tried to raise the necessary funding for the film. Winslet, who was also producer of the project, explained: “Men who think you want and need their help are incredibly scandalous. I even had a director say to me, ‘Listen, you make my movie and I’ll finance your little ‘Lee.’… Not much! Or we had potential male investors say things like: ‘Tell me, why should I like this woman?'”
Lee will be released in U.S. theaters in September.
