An exhibition is being held where you can appreciate national intangible cultural heritage works whose transmission is in danger of being lost.

The National Heritage Administration announced on the 20th that it will hold a special exhibition titled “Hands that Connect Time” from the 3rd to the 22nd of next month at Deoksugung Palace in Seoul to revitalize vulnerable national intangible cultural heritage items. Vulnerable items are intangible cultural heritage items that are in danger of being lost due to low popularity, and the National Heritage Administration selects and supports them every three years. Last year, 25 intangible cultural heritage items were selected, including gatil (hat making) craftsmen and nakjukjang (craftsmen who draw letters or pictures on bamboo skin with a hot iron). The exhibition will showcase around 150 works by 46 successors engaged in 20 vulnerable cultural heritage items.

The exhibition will be held in two places, Dondeokjeon and Deokhongjeon of Deoksugung Palace. In Dondeokjeon, you can see around 80 of the owner’s works, production tools, and videos of the production process. In particular, the works of four deceased owners, including Naju Muyeongbe Saetgolnai No Jinnam, will be exhibited. In Deokhongjeon, which was once used as Emperor Gojong’s reception room, 11 successors’ works made using traditional techniques and around 70 daily crafts that reinterpret traditional crafts in a modern way will be exhibited.

There will also be interactive programs during the exhibition period. On the 8th of next month, a talk concert titled “Continuing” will be held in the archive room on the 2nd floor of Dondeokjeon. Director Kim Joo-il, who planned the exhibition, and the successors will share various stories. From the 11th to the 16th of next month, a craft experience program where you can make daily necessities will be held twice a day.
