London: Labour Party leader Keir Starmer officially became the new Prime Minister of Britain on Friday after meeting King Charles III at Buckingham Palace. His party has won a historic victory in the UK general election. Labour leader Starmer (61) arrived at the palace with his wife Victoria Starmer. Earlier, Rishi Sunak (44) resigned from the post of Prime Minister after meeting King Charles III. Outgoing leader Rishi Sunak has accepted his defeat in the election and his Conservative Party has suffered the worst electoral defeat in history. After meeting King Charles, Starmer reached Downing Street to take over as the 58th leader of Britain. Stepping into 10 Downing Street as the new Prime Minister of Britain, Starmer said, ‘Our work is urgent and we are starting it today. You have given us a clear mandate and we will use it to bring about change and unite our country.’ He said, ‘Public service is a privilege; Whether you voted for Labor or not, my government will serve you.’
The mandate said it was a big responsibility
Starmer has promised a phase of “national renewal” during his tenure as prime minister. On Friday morning, the Labour Party won the 326 seats needed for a majority in parliament. After that, Starmer gave his victory speech in London, saying, “Change begins now. And it feels good, I must be honest.” He said, “With such a mandate comes a great responsibility. Our task is nothing less than to renew the ideas that hold this country together.”
Praise for Sunak’s efforts
He praised the ‘extra efforts’ of Britain’s first British-Asian Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The country has voted for change and we need to move forward together. With respect and humility, I invite all of you to join this government in a mission of national renewal.
