Kenyan national Ruth Chepengetti (30) broke the world record for the women’s marathon full course (42.195 km) by breaking the 2 hour 10 minute barrier.

Ceffengetty was the first to cross the finish line at the 2024 Chicago Marathon held in Chicago, USA on the 13th (local time), running the full course in 2 hours, 09 minutes and 56 seconds.

For the first time, she broke the 2 hour 10 minute barrier for the women’s marathon, which was considered impossible, and beat the previous world record of 2 hours 11 minutes 53 seconds achieved by Tijist Assefa (26, Ethiopia) at the Berlin Marathon last September by nearly 2 minutes. The record was broken.

It was also an overwhelming record, more than 7 minutes ahead of the 2 hours, 17 minutes and 32 seconds of Sutume Kebede (30, Ethiopia), who took second place in this competition.

Ceffengetty is an athlete who showed a particularly strong performance in the Chicago Marathon.

He reached the top for the first time in 2021, and recorded his third Chicago Marathon victory in this competition following 2022.

After the game, Scheffengetty told American broadcaster NBC, “I feel really good. “I am proud of myself,” he said. “My dream has come true.” I fought a lot (with myself throughout the game) while thinking about setting a new world record, and I achieved it. “I’m really grateful,” he said of winning.

Ceffengetti also dedicated the honor of this new record to his former teammate Kelvin Kiftum.

Kiftum died in a car accident in Kenya four months after setting a new men’s world record of 2 hours, 00 minutes and 35 seconds in Chicago last year.

“The world record has returned to Kenya,” said Copengetty. “I dedicate this world record to Kiftum,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the men’s division, Kenyan John Korir won the championship with a time of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 43 seconds.

In the men’s division, only nine athletes crossed the finish line faster than Ceffengetty.
