He was just preparing for the next race. Now Kevin Pozo has died at the age of 24.

The cycling world is in mourning: Kevin Pozo was run over and died after training in El Juncal, Ecuador. The Ecuadorian Cycling Federation (FEC) confirmed this on Friday. The athlete was only 24 years old.

Pozo is said to have collided with a truck on Thursday that was apparently driving in the opposite direction to him. The athlete was then taken to a hospital in Quito. He succumbed to his serious injuries on Friday. The truck driver has reportedly since been arrested.

The Ecuadorian cycling organization wrote in a statement: “The FEC regrets the sad death of Kevin Pozo, cyclist of the team ‘Sin Fronteras JN’ (Jhonatan Narváez). We express our deepest condolences and solidarity to his family and friends. Rest in peace.”

Pozo finished twelfth in the national cycling championship in 2021 and won the Colombian road race “Vuelta a Colombia” that same year. In El Juncal he had prepared for his next race.
