In a British court, famous American actor Kevin Spacey has been labeled a “sexual bully” by prosecutors as he faces trial on 12 charges of sexual assault. The allegations, made by four men covering incidents between 2001 and 2013, were presented at London’s Southwark Crown Court on the first day of evidence.
The 63-year-old actor, known for his roles in movies such as “American Beauty” and “The Usual Suspects,” denies all allegations. His defense lawyer spoke out against the accusations, claiming they contained numerous falsehoods.
Spacey, who served as the director of the Old Vic theatre in London from 2004 to 2015, spent a significant amount of time in the UK. However, he now finds himself at the center of a month-long trial, facing serious charges.
Prosecutor Christine Agnew emphasized Spacey’s fame should not overshadow the evidence presented. She described the actor as a man who does not respect personal boundaries, adding that he takes pleasure in making others feel powerless and uncomfortable.
Agnew provided details on the allegations made by each of the four complainants. The first complainant claimed that Spacey, after openly discussing his sexuality, began touching him inappropriately, which escalated to aggressive groping.
The second complainant recounted an incident in 2005 when he was forcefully grabbed by Spacey, who allegedly laughed in response to the complainant’s resistance. The third complainant, the first to report Spacey to the police, accused the actor of performing a sex act on him while he was asleep.
The fourth complainant alleged that Spacey repeatedly touched his leg and later grabbed his crotch when they were alone. Agnew concluded by stating that Spacey abused his influence to take whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
In January, Spacey pleaded not guilty to the charges, which include indecent assault, sexual assault, and activities without consent. His defense attorney, Patrick Gibbs, highlighted that the alleged incidents occurred a long time ago and suggested that elements had been twisted, exaggerated, or even fabricated for personal gain.
Gibbs questioned the motives behind the allegations, insinuating that the complainants may have been seeking wealth and influence from his client. He concluded his remarks by promising that Spacey would reveal the truth about what actually happened.
Spacey, who has had a successful Hollywood career spanning four decades, including winning two Oscars, maintains a London residence. The trial, which began on Friday, will resume next week with more evidence to be presented.
As the proceedings unfold, the outcome of this trial will determine the future course for the once-renowned actor who now stands accused of multiple sexual assault offenses.
